The knee is the largest joint in the body and helps you stand, walk, and remain balanced. It is a complex structure consisting of several parts, making it prone to many types of injuries.

If you are experiencing knee pain, it may be due to a common knee injury. While being able to recognize the symptoms of a knee injury can be helpful, it is important to consult an orthopedic doctor, such as Dr. Bedikian, for an accurate diagnosis of your specific injury.

Anatomy of the Knee

The knee consists of four primary components, each playing an essential role in its function:

Bones: The bones that make up the knee are the femur, the tibia, and the patella.

Cartilage: Articular cartilage is a flexible tissue that acts as a protective covering over the femur, tibia, and patella. It allows the bones of the knee to move with ease while bending.

Ligaments: These strong, rope-like structures connect the bones and keep the knee stable.

Tendons: Tendons connect muscles to bones. The quadriceps tendon joins the muscles in the front of the thigh to the patella, and the patella and tendon are connected by the patellar tendon.

Common Knee Injuries

Common knee injuries include tears of soft tissues, such as ligaments, fractures, and dislocation that often involve multiple structures within the knee. Pain, swelling, and instances of the knee catching can all indicate the presence of a knee injury.

Fractures: A patella, or kneecap, fracture describes a break at the front of the knee joint. Many knee fractures are the result of trauma, such as a fall or a car accident. There are several types of knee fractures, each depending on the severity of the injury that caused it. Knee injuries can also be exacerbated by your weight or other health conditions you may have.

Dislocation: Dislocation occurs when the bones of the knee are either partially or completely out of place. Although dislocation is a common sports injury, it can also happen when the knee is put under stress, or as a result of direct trauma to the kneecap.

Ligament Injuries: Ligament injuries can be categorized into two main types: cruciate injuries and collateral ligament injuries. The anterior cruciate ligament, or simply ACL, is the ligament that is most often injured and is frequently experienced by athletes participating in sports that require frequent changes in direction, like soccer. Patients with collateral ligament injuries usually experience pain on the inside or outside of the knee. Both types of injuries can severely limit mobility and cause swelling and pain.
