PCL Reconstruction in Chicago

With convenient locations in Palos Hills and Mokena, IL

The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is an important ligament that plays a key role in stabilizing the knee joint. While PCL injuries are not as common as other knee injuries, they can have significant implications for patients who do experience them. Surgical reconstruction of the PCL may be necessary in cases where the PCL injury is accompanied by damage to other ligaments or when conservative treatment methods are not effective. Dr. Bedikian performs PCL reconstruction to restore the knee's function and stability while minimizing the risk of long-term degenerative issues.

Before the PCL Reconstruction

The PCL injury must first be diagnosed; this usually involves an arthroscopy, which is a surgical procedure that uses a small camera to produce a detailed view of the injured areas. After the injury is confirmed, patients must prepare for surgery.

About the Procedure

When the ligament is torn, simply sewing the ends back together is often not enough for proper healing. Therefore, a torn posterior cruciate ligament generally needs to be reconstructed. During this procedure, the torn ligament is replaced with a tissue graft, usually sourced from another part of the patient's body or a human donor. The graft then needs several months to fully integrate and heal into the bone.

The reconstruction of the PCL is carried out using an arthroscope through small incisions. While this method is minimally invasive, some patients may require additional incisions on the side of the knee. Arthroscopic surgery often results in reduced postoperative pain for patients.

After the Procedure

Adhering to Dr. Bedikian’s post-operative rehabilitation instructions is necessary as you begin your recovery process. Doing so promotes optimal graft healing, establishes knee stability, minimizes the risk of re-injury, and facilitates a safe return to physical activities.

In the immediate post-operative phase, the focus is on protecting the graft, reducing swelling, and minimizing pain. This can be achieved with cold therapy, rest, and elevation. You will also gradually improve your range of motion — including full extension — during this point in your recovery. Depending on the specifics of your injury and treatment plan, partial weight bearing may be allowed. This means you will need to use devices like crutches to keep the majority of your weight off of the affected area. You may be cleared to begin performing certain therapeutic exercises to start restoring flexibility.

As your recovery progresses, you will begin to increase your range of motion and further improve your flexibility. You may be able to put more weight on the leg at this point, which allows you the chance to restore your normal walking gait. Physical therapy will continue to help strengthen your knee with the goal of returning your joint to full functionality.
